That’s right—drive-in movies are back, baby! If you’re planning to catch one of these newfangled motion picture spectacles, here are six things you need to know before watching drive-in movies in Las Vegas.
What is a drive-in movie theater?
You may be surprised to learn that drive-in movie theaters are still around. They were a big part of American culture during much of the 20th century, but with busy lifestyles and high costs associated with running a theater, few drive-ins remain. The experience itself is pretty unique; you sit in your car as a movie plays on one large screen about 400 feet away. We recommend checking out one of these affordable summer activities if you’re looking for something fun to do during off hours! Here’s what you need to know before heading out.
Las Vegas drive-in movies: There are several drive-in movie theaters in Las Vegas, including two located within five miles of each other. One is located at Sunset & Eastern (near downtown) and another at Nellis & Charleston (near McCarran Airport). Both offer double features nightly from dusk until midnight or later.
What are my options for watching the film?
There are several drive-in movie theaters in Las Vegas. Because of how hot it can get during summer months, most operate as part of a seasonal operation (i.e., they’re closed between November and March). The Mob Museum Drive-In is currently screening films and is located near downtown, about 10 minutes from The Strip. Every Thursday during May and June, you can see a film for just $10 ($5 for kids ages 6 to 12). Screenings start at dusk and will feature movies like Hook (starring Robin Williams) on May 9 or The Lego Movie on June 13.
Where are these movie theaters located?
While drive-in movie theaters are most closely associated with coastal cities, that doesn’t mean you can’t catch a flick in them if you live inland. California, Missouri and Texas all have drive-in movie theaters, although they are few and far between. The closest drive-in theater to Las Vegas is in Pahrump, about an hour away from Sin City. It has two screens and shows first-run movies for $8 per carload on Fridays through Sundays.
There are also several drive-ins located throughout Arizona. The two closest to Las Vegas are The Horseshoe Drive-In Theater outside of Kingman (about three hours away) and The El Capitan Drive-In Theater near Flagstaff (about four hours away). You can also find drive-ins in Utah (the closest is about five hours away), Colorado (four hours away) and New Mexico (six hours away).
If you want to see a movie under the stars but don’t want to drive so far, your best bet might be heading up north. There are still drive-in theaters scattered across Oregon and Washington State. And even though it may not be as close as you would like, there is one drive-in theater in Chico, California—about six hours from Las Vegas—that shows first run movies seven days a week for just $7 per person.
How much does it cost to attend one of these events?
Some drive-in movie theaters charge a flat rate to get in. At other venues, patrons pay per carload or per vehicle. Prices range from $10-$40 depending on when you go and what type of equipment you watch movies on (projector or digital). Bring cash, just in case they don’t accept cards. What should I bring?: As with any outdoor event, dress for comfort. You’ll also want to bring something to sit on and some bug spray if mosquitoes are an issue where you live. How do I find out about upcoming events?: Many drive-in theaters post their schedules online at their websites or Facebook pages. If there isn’t one near you, ask around at local mom & pop shops that may have had fliers available during past seasons.
When can I see a movie under the stars?
The largest drive-in movie theater in Southern Nevada, Sunset Drive-In, is located at 1350 S. Highway 160 near Boulder City. Not far from Lake Mead, it’s one of only three operating drive-in theaters left in Southern Nevada. The next largest drive-in movie theater is located at 4050 S. Nellis Blvd., at Blue Diamond Road on North Las Vegas Boulevard and a little north of West Centennial Parkway.
What do I need to bring with me?
First things first, you’ll need a car. Drive-in movies are best viewed from a moving vehicle so plan to come early, park and tune your radio for free drive-in movie classics on AM 900. You’ll need to bring all of your own snacks and drinks – there is no concession stand! Are there any age restrictions for these events?
While children are certainly welcome to join their parents, there are age restrictions for these events. Anyone under 18 will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian; those between 18 and 20 must have a legal adult with them. It’s also worth noting that alcohol is strictly prohibited at all drive-in movie events; your ticket is considered a license to drink alcohol responsibly elsewhere on site. No one under 21 may consume alcohol during these movies.
